Stay a while and draw with me
Hello my darlings,
It's us again! Back with another fact alert! So let's get right in’n’about it Drawing is making is come back in the adult world with colouring books, sketch pads and paint by numbers flying off the shelves as a form of self-distraction from the immense stresses of the modern adult world. And we’re not surprised! Whether you consider yourself artistic or not study after study show the positive impacts art forms can have on your emotional well being.
A study conducted by Jennifer Drake (PHD) at Brooklyn College (or University to you and I..) conducted an experiment through drawing on 40 college students, a small by representative number, they were all randomly assigned one options. To draw to distract or draw to express, and then told to recount their saddest moment in their life. Add on top of this the knowledge that the majority of students can be assumed to be under the immense stress that University can hold.
The stay was repeated four times over coming days, with the students being asked to fill out questionnaires on their emotions at random points the study.
The results were residing strongly in one field, those who used drawing as a distraction from their stress and sadness showed vast emotional improvement and commented on how drawing had helped them.
This result is shadowed by the global use of something called Art Therapy, the use of art in any form to relieve and reduce emotional strain. Whether you can give Van Gogh a run for his money or draw the most basic os stick men, art is a recognised way of relieving stress.
WHY?
It is another form of self-care. It is often in our lives, we forget that we need and deserve downtime and self-care. Taking even a few short moments on a regular basis to devote to a hobby can give you more of relief than you originally may have thought possible. With art, you have the additional benefit of being left with something to show for it.

It can help you tap into a "state of flow." Have you ever been so engrossed in an activity to the point of being in a near-meditative state? If so, you might have been experiencing what some psychologists refer to as ‘Flow’ Similar to what we know as meditation, flow can lead to improved performance and lower stress levels. You can experience flow when you partake in any creative activity you deem stress-relieving and enjoyable from drawing to sports!
It can take your mind off things. Creating art can take your mind off of whatever is stressing you, at least for a few minutes. So with that said my chickens, at a time where most of you have likely experienced some form of mental strain through this pandemic, why not take half an hour today and try some drawing? You might just find you love it!
Remember, there are no right answers, use someone else art as a base for your own, start at the basics or go full Picasso abstract if you wish! Because in the art world, pigs can fly and chickens can run a hen party business!
